Camping in nature

Eco camping

Our eco camp is run in line with sustainability criteria: caring for land, water, energy and people. We design every detail so guests can enjoy comfort today without borrowing from tomorrow.

What makes this campsite "eco"?

Availability of green spaces - we provide access to green areas for guests to enjoy the natural world. Hedgehogs, birds, deer... just be still for a bit and you will see them!

Native plant garden - Our garden and terrain have native plants to encourage biodiversity and preserve natural flora.

Composting – We are composting organic waste to prevent it from going to landfills.

Implementing pest control without the use of chemicals – there are bird and bat boxes on the campsite to control the mosquito population, and we have goldfish in our water tanks for the same reason.

Use of eco-friendly cleaning products – We use environmentally friendly cleaning products to reduce the use of toxic and environmentally harmful chemicals.

Use of recycling bins - we provide separate bins for the collection of recyclable waste to encourage waste sorting, and providing a give-and-take shelf for goods that are still good.

Reduced use of single-use plastics - we limit the use of single-use plastics, such as plastic bottles, bags and utensils, to reduce the negative environmental impact. Lots of it we re-use, replace with wood, glass or metal, or we bring our own packaging when shopping.

Enhancement of local development - we offer information and opportunities for guests to shop locally and engage in local traditions and cultural events. We promote traditional products and souvenirs to support the local economy.

Use of renewable energy - part of the energy required for the property comes from renewable sources

Use of LED bulbs - energy-efficient LED lights and solar lights

Rainwater harvesting - Collecting rainwater for household use, such as watering gardens and rinsing surfaces.

Locally Sourced - our food is produced or grown locally to support local agriculture

Organic food – We serve food produced through organic methods, without harmful pesticides or artificial fertilisers. We make our own fertilisers.

Environmentally friendly furniture – We use furniture made from wood and environmentally friendly materials that are recyclable. In fact, most of it is already recycled!

Upcycling objects on the property – We promote waste reduction with our give-and-take box, we upcycle cartons to wallets, socks to dish scrubbies, clothes to cloths...

Green building practices – We like to use eco-friendly materials and methods during the construction of the property to minimise environmental impact.

And more:

Bogata Šuma means Rich Forest in Croatian. We plant more (fruit and nut) trees than we cut (for cooking and heating the house), so that our terrain becomes a beautiful edible landscape.

We separate all waste and what we can, we re-use or re-purpose. All compost goes to the chickens and in the future all shower water will be filtered and cleaned by plants in a pond in the forest. We try to be creative with resources: prunings and fallen branches are used as fence.
We preferably scythe the grass so we can use it as animal food, and we let our sheep "mow" the field when possible.
We do our best to make people aware of the scarcity of drinking water on our planet.

Our garden is producing delicious vegetables, fruits and herbs, also to feed our chickens and rabbits. What we don't have we still buy, although not much because we adjusted our diet to local and in-season food. No chocolate, coffee, no bananas or avocados.

About eco and terrain maintenance: with this amount of hectares we fell for machine addiction. We try to find simple ways of cleaning a piece of terrain, like with a scythe.
We prefer to work without machines. They are noisy, smelly, they need fossile fuel and break down. The service and fuel supply adds unacceptable burden on our kilometer account. Sometimes a start can't be made without. We are searching for the best ways. And learning along the road.

Eco and our place in the universe; We are on the pearl earth. The miracle of us being in the right place; that's eco to us. Let's enjoy earth, together with all beings.

a natural swimpond is on our wishlist!

A natural, grey water cleaning swim pond is on the top of our wishlist! It would mean water security, increase of biodiversity and a way to recycle relatively clean shower water and rain water.
